  • About Joel Shane

    Download CV

I have an academic background in cultural studies and anthropology, followed by art training with a focus on photography and drawing, then by design and type instruction in North America and Europe.

Originally from Winnipeg, I studied in Halifax and Montreal, most recently completing a masters in the KABK 's type+media program in the Hague, Netherlands , with a focus on type and lettering. I have since been designing books and teaching in Honolulu.

A serious interest in type , and the beautifying and organizing of information was fostered from my design studies in Montreal, during which I interned at Hatch Show Print letterpress in Nashville, and after which I freelanced for one year then interned for a summer at Studio Dumbar in the Hague, Netherlands.

Critical thought, historical and cultural knowledge, an interest in language and images, and a desire to make beautiful things often lead me to become involved in projects' fundamental structures, conception to execution.
